3 Months Before the Proposal
- Choose and confirm your destination — factor in shoulder vs. peak season for both price and crowd levels
- Book your proposal photographer — the best local photographers fill up 3–6 months out, especially in Santorini and Bali
- Research and shortlist proposal spots — identify 2–3 backup options in case of weather or access issues
- Begin ring research and place your order — allow 6–8 weeks if custom or resizing is needed
- Book flights and accommodation — rates are lowest 3+ months out and rooms at proposal-friendly properties sell quickly
- Draft a rough budget and confirm it covers photographer, venue or access, accommodation, and a 15% buffer
- Check visa and entry requirements for both you and your partner
1 Month Before the Proposal
- Confirm your photographer booking in writing and share the proposal concept and any specific shots you want
- Book any access fees, private spot reservations, or venue deposits
- Arrange flowers, setup, or decoration if using a local florist or planner — brief them on aesthetic and colour
- Plan the cover story — what reason will you give for being at that location at that time?
- Research the nearest quality restaurant and make a reservation for the evening after
- Confirm ring has arrived and fits correctly — if not, allow 2 weeks for adjustment
- Check weather patterns for your destination and time of day — know your backup plan

1 Week Before the Proposal
- Confirm final logistics with your photographer — exact meeting point, time, and communication plan
- Reconfirm any booked restaurants, setups, or third-party vendors
- Pack the ring in your carry-on — never check a ring, and keep it on your person through security
- Write and rehearse what you want to say — it doesn't need to be a speech, but having key words ready prevents blanking
- Brief any trusted friends or family if they're involved in the plan
- Download offline maps of the area in case of poor signal at the spot
The Day Before
- Check the weather forecast and review your backup plan if conditions look poor
- Message your photographer to confirm tomorrow's plan — timing, any last-minute changes
- Scout the location in daylight if possible — check the light direction, where to stand, where the photographer will be hidden or positioned
- Charge your personal phone fully — you'll want it working for calls and photos immediately after
- Place the ring in an accessible spot — not buried at the bottom of a bag
- Get a good night's sleep — nerves are normal, but rest helps everything feel more present
Proposal Day
- Have the ring on your person from the moment you leave — don't leave it in a safe or bag at the hotel
- Arrive at the location early to check conditions and confirm photographer positioning
- Silence your phone before the moment — but keep it accessible for immediately after
- Let the moment breathe — don't rush to show the ring; let the emotion land first
- After the yes: take your time with photos, then move to the celebration dinner or activity you've planned
- Share the news with close family before posting publicly — a quick call means more than an Instagram reveal
- Ask your photographer when to expect the first edited images — typically 3–7 days for a rush delivery
- Take one quiet moment together before the evening begins — the day moves fast
